Two suggestions:
1. update the drivers for your DVD/CD drive - R click on My Computer icon on desktop > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button. Check to see if it is listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives and if it has any exclamation mark next to it - this should give you the make and model and you can go to the manufacturer's web site to download the latest drivers. OR you can R click on the device name in Device Manager and choose "Update driver..." and allow the Hardware Update Wizard to search for an updated driver.

If this still does not help:

2. Have a look at this - you may need to delete upper and/or lower filters in your registry.
Follow the instructions to the letter (scroll down to "Manually delete the registry entries") - don't play with anything else in your registry unless you know what you are doing - registry errors can make a good computer into a good doorstop!
If when you get to where the filters are supposed to be and they aren't there - then you don't have them and that won't be the cause of your problem - don't go looking for them elsewhere in the registry.

I've got the same problem with my Vaio XP SP3. I've done the following:

1. Replaced the DVD firmware.
2. Uninstalled and re-installed Itunes.
3. Deleted the registry Key filters per the Apple support page.
4. Deleted the Roxio CD burning software because I think it was the Sony update for that software that started it all.

ITunes will recognize and play CD's in the drive, but WILL NOT burn anything to the drive because, " the registry settings used by the Itunes drivers for importing and burning CD's are missing"

I've been all over the Internet for the past two days for a fix and so far the SOB still doesn't work. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Sorted!

I have fixed my Itunes DVD/CD burning problem by ADDING back the UPPER FILTER subkey;

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Click on the RH side of the registry to bring up the NEW context menu.
3. Click on NEW MULTI STRING value.
4. Click on MODIFY
5. Add the following TEXT in the value data block GEARAspiWDM.
6. Close and exit the registry and reboot.

If it still doesn't work go to the Gearworks website and download the drivers for XP; install them and then retry this workaround.

Right - let the drinking begin!
