gif/bmp problems after installing sp2

I've just installed sp2 on one of our systems and when I get an e-mail with a gif animation I save it to my pictures yet when I go back to that file later, the item isn't automatically opened with the ms viewer (even though it's configured to do so) nor does the item saved even show the extensions. Before sp2 I could save the animations and they would open when I went back to look at them. I was also able to see by the extension path if they were bmp or gif, now I get nothing. Anyone else have this problem, how did you resolve it? I've emptied all temp files, I've got ie and oe set up to allow pictures and if I keep clicking I can eventually get them open but I want to open them automatically after they're saved to my system. They do open in the e-mails (now, they didn't in the beginning either) but not when they're saved. Any ideas? :4-dontkno

it's all bmp/gif images

I've got them configured to be opened with ms viewer and double checked my configurations and they do say that's how they're to be opened but they won't open automatically. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that the complete extension isn't shown either. I do get the choice to save them as either gif or bmp and up until then everything is normal but when I go back to look at it, there's no file association. It only gives the name that I put in and nothing else and it won't open up unless I manually open the viewer.

I'm a step closer

It seems to be an extension problem. As I mentioned I can't get it to show the extensions, when I do open the picture manually with the viewer I don't get the option to always open files with that program. They will open automatically if I rename the item and manually type in the extension of .gif or .bmp I just looked at an e-mail received with a gif animation and tried to save it with the original name from the sender but it doesn't show the extension as being gif, it shows the provider name instead. Is this an Outlook problem? Shouldn't it say the file type instead?

may have found the answer

I was just surfing to see if I could find the answer, in viewing ms.com they mentioned the extension problem and said it was due to various reasons; one of them being the temp file being full. That wasn't my problem since I'd already heard about that and I clean them out on a regular basis. The site also said that it may happen if the saved name has more than one point (.) in its name. Apparently that causes the computer to get confused and then isn't able to recognize the gif or bmp extension, oddly enough just changing the name and doing a 'save as' a gif doesn't work unless you actually type in the gif extension in the name. Their solution said to add the extension yourself. That much I was able to figure out already on my own. I'm going to keep surfing to see if there's another solution. For me it's not a problem but I know a few people who have even less computer knowledge then me and they wouldn't know or understand about adding the extension manually (I help a number of senior citizens with basic computer lessons so that they don't end up isolated due to age or illness). If anyone knows of another solution involving the configuration then please let me know, if I could do that then the srs. I help won't need to worry about the extensions (for some of them this is their first time with a computer and they get nervous with modern technology; some, not all, others can't get enough of the computer :sayyes: ).
