Install service packs offline?

I need to download service packs from Microsoft and install offline. I just did Windows XP SP1 on a T1 line this morning--their web site said it would take 1 minute to do online; it finally finished after 2 1/2 hours! I don't want Microsoft to search my PC and decide what updates to do; all I want is to download the SP files to my hard drive then install at my convenience. Anyone know how to do this?

Anytime I download anything from Microsoft I take my zipdrive to a public place and do it there. Haven't tried it on service packs but I think it'll work. I always get them from a friend that works for them!

But how do you get to wherever Microsoft keeps downloadable service packs? In Windows 98 and 2000 I was able to download the files, but now it just starts searching my PC and holding it hostage to do with it whatever Bill Gates wants. I need to control that process and I'm not seeing that option on the Microsoft download site.

Thanks for your help...
