Here's one for ya's.
Scenario - three PC's all running XP (2 x home, 1 x Pro), Office 2003 (sp3), IE7, Defender, CA Anti-Virus and other misc. apps.
1st PC - Athlon 64 X2 6000+, M2N-MX SE, 2GB DDR800, 8600GT 1GB, XP Pro SP3
2nd PC - DELL P4 1.8GHz, 768MB, IGP, XP Home SP2
3rd PC - Toshiba Satellite A60, Mobile P4 3.0Ghz, 640MB RAM, ATI Mobility 9600, XP Home SP2
All three, which incidently weren't used at all for 3 weeks, have developed exactly the same problem, as follows:
As previously stated, none of the three were used at all for three weeks. Upon starting they did the usual hunt for Microsoft Updates. This is where it all went pear shaped. All three PC's have decided that when updates are available (or being checked for) they aren't going to play anymore - all three systems pretty well hang. Apps will eventually open but only after a few minutes or so.
Process list indicates that one instance of svchost running at 50% with memory usage slowly but surely climbing. System Idle likewise running at 50% (available resources I understand). Kill the offending svchost process and all good except that it seems to reinstate itself whenever any network connections are made (local, internet, updates, whatever).
Now, please don't mention Viruses, spyware, malware etc. - IT IS NOT ANY OF THESE - GUARANTEED!!! I have deleted ALL locally residing files and references relating to updates - no change. Have tried removing SP3 - no change, have used system restore going back weeks - no change.
I have also trawled to the deepest depths of MS support amongst others and while there are many posts and potential solutions offered, NONE work. Tried ALL references and so-called 'fixes' offered by MS - BIG WASTE OF TIME, nothing they offered me works to address this problem.
I'm no MVP but from my position it all seems to directly point to something to do with MS Update. The conundrum being, I have had to completely disable MS Update on all three systems just to be able to use them, but I can't then enable updates to get a potential fix (if available) because updates are the problem in the first place. And, with auto updates disabled but going to update site manually the problem resurfaces.
Now I know this all sounds a bit long-winded and probably lacking the detail needed to know exactly what is going on but I'm at a seriously loose end and, considering that all three systems are work required, I'm starting to get a little peeved off (but whats new, we are dealing with Microsoft here so it shouldn't come as any surprise to find myself wanting to kill, mame and destroy all things related to Gates).
That said, if anyone thinks they know what's going on and need any tech info let me know and I will post.
The thing that really peeves me off is that all three were 100% AOK three weeks ago and now, in all their 'wisdom' the big M decides "You need these updates so things work better, I will download and install for you and all will be good - aren't I good to you". Which in MS lingo really translates to Windows saying: "what the hell do you want, I'm busy, how dare you interupt my pointless hard drive grinding and carrying on - leave me alone so I can download mega-megabytes of crap you dont need - so there"!
