Every few minutes at varying intervals, svchost.exe will consume 100% cpu for 3 to 10 seconds.
I probably wouldn't have noticed or cared except that when this happens, dns stops working. For example, if I'm using Firefox and attempting to load a website, instead of quickly resolving the dns for the url and taking me to the site, it will be stuck on "Looking up [site url]" until the svchost.exe stops taking up 100% cpu.
The process is listed under task manager as being a network service, so I think it's safe to say it's not a virus or anything.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on an AMD system.
