Tried to fix girlfriend's computer but ran into a dead end. Need Help. [moved]

My girlfriend's computer (dell inspirion 5150) was pretty much completely infested with spyware, viruses, trojans, etc... I used lavasoft adaware, spybot, and AVG while in safe mode to try to get rid of them, but it didn't even make a small difference. Really bad popups, and there were a ton of fake windows security messages in the toolbar. The internet was almost unusable and i tired to download hijack this and run it so i could get help on this forum in that section, but i was never able to without the computer messing up in some way.

I entered her original windows cd that came with purchase to try and erase the current stuff and reinstall windows. I did the same thing to my old computer because of non-virus problems and it uninstalled and erased the current things and reset things up easily. Her's however, installed a new windows xp operating system and left the old one there. Now when i start it up, there is a choice between two windows operating sytstems but when i try to choose the old one, it says there are problems with it and won't let me access it. And the new one didn't install everything completely and, while virus free, is more blank than it was when she first received it. It seems like the cd didn't install enough to get it to normal and i can't even set up the internet. She already had backed up the only thing on the computer she wanted to keep and doesn't care about saving anything.

As for the questions i wanted to have answer in cliff notes (move me to a different sub forum if necessary):

1- How can I completely erase everything on the harddrive (both operating systems) to the point where the entire harddrive is completely blank and i can try and start over?

2- Will that eliminate the really bad spyware/virus problems she had? The new operating system hasn't had any problems yet, but to be sure i wanted to wipe everything clean.

3- Is there a sub forum that could help me get everything running properly after completely erasing and reinstalling windows?

Thank you and i'm sorry if this is a typical beginner question and possibly in the wrong forum. I browsed a bit the other day but couldn't tell where to put it and how to ask it. Thank's again.

Re: Tried to fix girlfriend's computer but ran into a dead end. Need Help.

Since it seems this is more of an install issue and request for help than security/malware removal at this point, I'm going to move this to the Windows XP forum where you'll get better coverage by those in the know.

Only thing I can help you with is question 1. So, what happened is you tried to reinstall windows, but now you have two seperate operating systems and you want to reinstall windows and erase everything. It sounds like you dual-partitioned the drive. To erase everything, reinstall windows, and get rid of the dual-partition here's what you need to do:
Put the disk with the operating system on it into the drive.
Turn off the computer.
When the computer is starting up, press whatever key/ key combination will take you to the boot menu. (It's either F11 or F12 for mine)
Choose the option that says something along the lines of boot from cd. (It might be phrased strangely, but hopefully you can figure it out)
I don't remember exactly what happens from there, but follow the directions as best you can, until you get to the part where it takes about partitions and has a box with a few different options at the bottom.
One you see that delete them all (Arrow-key over them and press whatever they tell you to and then confirm it)
Once you do that, the only option in that box should be "Unpartitioned Space".
Choose to install windows there.
Choose to format it with NTFS (NOT the quick one, patience is a virtue)
If my memory serves me correctly it should start filling up some loading bars while it formats your hard drive.
After it's done with that, it should take you to the windows install, which is pretty straightforward.

As for question 3, my only advice is make sure you have a different computer with access to the internet and a flash drive, when the computer reinstalls windows you'll probably be missing some drivers.

To remove the old Windows boot entry, you go into msconfig (Run -> msconfig), select the boot.ini tab and remove the one that doesn't work.

To get on the internet, you need drivers for the network interface card. You should also install drivers for all the other devices in the laptop.

You can find all the drivers here.

Ok, here is an update.

Following some other website tutorials, i booted directly from the disk from startup, and used the recovery stuff to format the harddrive. Then, when i rebooted from the CD i chose to install windows. I saw that there was already partitioned space being used and 2 unpartitioned spaces. I deleted the current partitioned space and then there was only one empty unpartitioned space and i installed windows on that. Now it is reinstalled and running.

I looked through all the cds that came with her computer and none of them had any drivers or anything else to get the computer fully operational (thanks, dell). I lost my old flash drive so i'll just use my external hd to save and then upload the drivers for her inspiron 5150 onto the new windows os and report back if i'm still having trouble. Thank you.

edit: There are 80 drivers for her computer, should i download them all? Also, do i have to download them all individually, or is there a way to just download and then upload onto her computer afterwards all at once?

hello ,

you would be best if you downloaded them indiviually , then burn them to disk , then install them one at a time

for some of the drivers are going to require a reboot to compleatly install them

take your time with this process for if you get a botched install on those drivers then you will be creatng other issues

this way you will not have to redo any steps

also it will be wise if you defrag after each install , in cluding the reformat, for this will ensure that all programs are properly installed as a whole instead of fragmented !!!

you will see that you pc will like you that much better

If your install disc did not include SP2, the first thing to do is install that . . then the chipset drivers followed by any others you need. You can look in Device Manager to see the devices that do not have drivers loaded. Then install your antivirus and go online for the remaining 80 or spo windows updates.

If you key in your service tag, the number of drivers should be considerably reduced.

Downloading the drivers is taking forever on my computer and i'm not done yet. I'm also reading that installing them is going to take forever and proper order. I stumbled upon this ebay site and it seems to be what i'm looking for. $13 is not that bad for it being much easier and having support option by the group that sells it. What do you guys think?

I'm sorry. I thought i posted the link.

There are 80 drivers and some are unnecessary i'm sure, and also i understand there is a correct "order" and way to install these. Her computer is completely fresh so i don't even have internet or any programs at all on there (except office which was on a different cd that i installed). I'm mainly nervous about installing these incorrectly or missing something that would ultimately damage the computer's potential. I'm also severely crammed for time these days which is why I was considering that ebay thing.

Fair enough. I was skeptical as well, but figured i'd ask anyway.

I do not have internet on her computer and struggled to even get it going early on and it seems i need to access the dell page to figure out what is or is not installed. From what i gathered, If i burn onto a cd or transfer through my external hd the following files and then upload them in order, i should be ok.

windows sp2 and then the drivers in order that the dell page describes:
