which piece of hardware is screwing up?

ok, heres whats hapening to my frustratingly annoying computer:

it restarts. it doesnt seem to mind what activity im engaged in when it does it. but what happens is it just instantly restarts without any warning. (like, screen goes black, windows starts up again) some more common things im doing when it screws up are: desert combat, C&C generals and 3d modelling. but it is by no means limited to them.

untill a very resently, when windows eventually got to the desktop after it happening, i would get this message saying " windows has recovered from a serious error, lets send some meaningless data somewhere where it will probably be forgotten" (obviously, it didnt say that exactly) and when i press that button, internet explorer takes me to a windows site that says my error happened because of a device driver. ive since gone to the ATI site and downloaded the latest drivers for my radeon 9600, with no effect.

stuff happening that led up to this: about 2 or 3 months ago i got a virus or something that kept looping the boot sequence, so i took it in to the people that sold it, and they fixed it by re-installing windows but keeping the data on it. after that, it started screwing up. it did the random restart thing very rarely, but it got more often as the weeks went by. so i reformatted completely and re-installed. same **** kept happening. i reformatted again yesterday, and its restarted twice in the last hour. these days it happens at least 3 times a day.

some other stuff that may help you: in my games, specificly DC and C&C generals, my computer lags alot more than it used to, more than back when my comp was newer, and had ALOT more crap on the harddrive.

Athlon XP 2800
512mb ddr400 ram
MSI K7N2 Delta with nvidia nforce 2 chipset
Radeon 9600 XT 128mb
80gb samsung (i think its samsung)

hey cmbl,

first check your cpu and system temperatures in the bios. if your cpu is over 60c, its very hot and below 60c is fine. also how much power are you running on your computer? 350watts? 400watts? what brand is your power supply?

you can also try changing the videocard drivers from your videocard and see if that helps get rid of the problem. another thing you can do is to check the eventlog and see if the computer post any errors. you can go to the eventlog by:

right click on my computer -> click on manage -> click on the eventviewer on the left hand side. then see if you get any errors mesages and post it here so we can help you further solve the problem.

another thing you can do is to test out your ram for any errors. check out www.majorgeeks.com and download memtest86 from the memory section. then you will need to put the program on a cd or floppy and boot from the cd or floppy. of course you will need to change your first boot device in the bios to cdrom or floppy. then the comp should boot to memtest86 and the program will begin testing out your ram for errors. let memtest go for about 10passes minimum.

Hi

You might get a better idea of what's happening to your temperatures if you monitor them when running the more demanding games software - try this:-
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

If you want to ensure that there is no possibility of the original virus infection still remaining on your drive, I would suggest running the drive manufacturer's utilility/diagnostic software and re-setting the drive to zeros - you can download the software for free from their site.

Should you try this option, I would recommend using the original mainboard drivers and the same ATI drivers that you had when things ran OK - if all is well, then try upgrading the drivers.

thanks for the help guys, as for the error logging, i went there and found these errors and warnings:

as i mentioned, i have hade two restarts today, and the only errors today have been caused by ati2mtag. whats that?

i downloaded the temperature monitor, but its not clear what temperature is for what:

well, as luck had it, just as i was downloading registry mechanic 4, it restarted! yes! ive been trying to trigger it because i changed a windows recovery option, so now when it screws up, it shows the error instead of restarting. In the blue screen that appeared, it said that if there was a driver listed below, then basicly go fiddle with that driver. and this was listed:

ati3duag.dll - adress BFB2A2FD base at BFA77000, datestamp 42c2obd6

that clearly points towards my video driver, which just so happens to be the very latest driver available on ati.com.

what i need now is an older driver for my radeon 9600 XT, if anyone can point me in the right direction, i would be very grateful. google returned ro results for me.

thanks, but i acctually downloaded a driver from that site earlier today, an earlier driver, but the problem persists.

im beginning to think that my vid card is going/gone, cause a friend said that his old 9800se caused the same problem, because he increased the frequency too much.

the last time i increased the frequency was when another friend came over and increased the frequency from i think 68 to 75 hz. surely that wouldnt cause my card to fry?
