WiFi problems on XP

My windows XP desktop will not stay connected to wifi. It has a strong signal, but after a couple of hours of being on, it disconnects and the only way to reconnect is to restart the computer. Doing a connection repair never works.

I've tried two different wifi adapters. An ASUS PCI card and an Edimax USB dongle. Same results for both, they will work for a while, then quit.

I have gone into the settings and set them so the computer won't put them into idle to save power, so I don't think that is the issue.

It isn't the wifi itself. All other devices we have on wifi work fine. (iPad2, iPad mini, Kindle and iphone 5 all use wifi with no issues) It only seems to be the Windows XP machine that has the problems. When it is connected it works great. It just never stays connected for more than a hour or two.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Th IP config log shows you are connected with your WiFi adapter. the Default Gateway (your Router) is showing, and it's address is 192.168.254.254. Your router is showing strong WiFi signal In WiFi Inspector and and there are no other wireless networks being picked up that may block the signal. However, Your router is broadcasting on channel #2. Boot into the Router setup and try changing the router broadcast channel to #6 or #11.
Power Cycle your Router and Modem or modem/router combo (eg) Unplug the power cable, wait 15 seconds, and plug them back in, restart your computer. When all lights come back up try connecting again.
If the connection is lost, Start a Elevated Command Prompt as previously shown and type ipconfig /release and press enter, the IP address should turn to 0.0.0.0. Then type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter, then type ipconfig /registerdns and press enter, then type ipconfig /renew, you should get a new IP address.
Do you have any trial versions of Anti-Virus software installed? If so uninstall them. Go into Avast ecurity software and see if it is blocking any web sites or connections

I just changed the channel to #6. I don't see that avast is blocking anything. I should mention that before setting it to channel #2, the modem was set to Auto, which scans channels #1, #6 and #11 and auto connects to the clearest channel. I changed it from Auto to channel #2 a few days ago hoping to be able to maintain the connection, it still didn't work. Hopefully #6 will. We live several hundred feet from the nearest houses and might pick up a neighbors wifi signal on a windy day, but for the most part having interference with the neighbors wifi shouldn't be too much of an issue. I will see if it disconnects while connected to #6 and report back if it does. Thank you for the help.
