Hi I am runnig windows xp pro and every about 2 hours or so my computer restarts itself and it won't restart right, like it will do alot of stuff normal and then when it's in the middle of booting it just goes black except for a little blinking underscore in the top left corner of the screen. At that point in time i can't do anything except shut it down hard. Is there anything that you guys can think of that might be wrong because i can't even burn a dvd anymore it restarts in the middle of it. thanks

Hi,

Tell us about your rig....motherboard, power supply brand name and watts, cpu, drives, video card. Also, when the rig was put together, did you use Artic Silver between the Heatsink and CPU, or did you use the factory pad.

Then, to help us, download and run this free program and list voltages from the power supply and temps both at-rest (first turned on and idle) and under-stress (playing a game, etc). Here is the download:

Speedfan will tell you the temperatures and a whole lot more. It's free

Hi,

Well, this program is going to be discontinued, but you should still be able to get it for a while yet. This will tell you everything about the computer, with the exception of the power supply. The power supply info would be on the side of the supply, printed right there.

Download and install this free program called Everest and it will tell you everything about your computer.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

With the exception of providing the power supply info, these two programs should fix you up with the needed info.

This has been edited because of length and the important information has been left that deals with this problem:
alright here is a screenshot of the fan speed thing on the attachments and also here is the report from everest.

Hi,

I have sent you a PM about the report in its entirety and the need to omit the non-essential data. However, I have reviewed it in its entirety and tried to keep that which is relevalent.

The temp you have listed for your CPU is way out of balance if that is an at-rest temp. If this is the at-rest temp, your CPU is under a lot of stress from heat related issues and that can cause multiple problems. There are some things we can do, but I need to know for sure that this is an at-rest temps for the cpu:

CPU 59 °C (138 °F)

Please clarify this issue so we can look at possible solutions.

Hi,

O.K., here is what we need to do first. Get a can of air from either wally world, a local hardware store, or computer store and blow out all the fans (especially the heatsink and power supply fans) and while you are at it, get rid of all the dust in the case by blowing out the rest of it. However, the most important part is the fans, so do that first and make sure they are clean.

Second, talk to me about the build. Did you use Artic Silver or the factory pad putting this together?

Third, is the heatsink fan blowing down as it should or pulling air up??

Fourth, tell me about your case fans....where located, which direction are they blowing.

While you have the side off the case, look for the brand name of that power supply. (or did I miss that info someplace in your posts)

Do these things and post back....when you get it blown out, then check your temperature again and report that back to me. You are doing a nice job of going through this process, so keep up the good work.

O.K. i will get a can of air and clean the fans and stuff asap but as for the other things I don't really know what you mean by the build being artic silver or factory pad and i know i should know this but where exactly is the heatsink.i'll tell you wher my fans are and the power supply info when i get the can of air.

Hi,

I must assume that this is a purchased computer and not a build it yourself model, so will save that Artic Silver question for later, so don't sweat that.

Since you don't know much about the inside of a computer case, I am going to give you a link that it might be a good idea to browse before you open the case. This link is somewhat outdated, but has pictures of some of the inside parts of a computer. Let me know if this does not answer your questions. Here is the link:

http://www.bcae1.com/comptutorial/insidethecomputercase.html

A closing comment is that just clean any fan you see with that air and you will get the heatsink fan. Be sure to do the other parts that have dust on them also and don't forget the fan on the back of the case in the power supply.

Post back with concerns.

Alright I just opened it up and checked some stuff and here is what I found out. Here is the info on the power supply it is a

Antec true 430
430W
AC input 115v/10a, 230v/5a; 60Hz/50Hz

DC output: | +5v | +12v | +3.3v | -5v | -12v | +5v SB |
Max : | 36A | 20A | 28A | 0.5A| 1.0A| 2.0A |
Min : | 0A | 0.8a | 0A | 0A | 0A | 0A |

+5V, +12V, AND +3.3V MAX. LOAD 410W

As for the fans there is one on the side 2 on te back and i don't know if you need this but i believe ther is 2 on the power supply, And the heatsink is blowing out faintly towards me.

I have yet to get air and blow it out but i'll will probally tomorrow and i'll update you then but until then do you think it could be a error elsewhere?

P.S. I did have this computer custom made for me at comp usa i believe and have recentally put a new disk drive in it but the problem started after i had it in for about a month.

Hi,
That helps a lot. Although we do like a little bigger power supply, the Antec truepower 430 is a very good one. Antec (and enermax) makes IMO the best power supply for a decent price to use in a home computer. Unless we find something else with voltages, I will assume that the Antec power supply is doing the job for you. We will check voltages later if we don't get this under control. When you expand to more powerful components, take a look at the Antec 550, but for now, just hold on that issue.

In the meantime, since you will be getting your can of air tomorrow, there are a couple of things you might want to consider doing this evening.

First, you need to make sure that the rear fans pull hot air out of your case. If they are blowing in, then change them to pull hot air out of the case and blow it out the back of the case. The front fan needs to be pulling cool air in the case, so if it is not, then change it around. (just pull the screws or bolts and turn it upside down)

Second, if I understand what you say, your heatsink fan is on wrong. That fan needs to be blowing cool air down on the heatsink. If you change it, don't break the seal between the heatsink and the cpu. If you go ahead and do that (break the seal), then you must take it apart and clean it and reapply a thermal solution. All you have to do to change it without breaking the seal is to loosen the brackets, lift the fan up, turn it over so it blows down and put those brackets back down. It is reallly quite easy to do. Remember, heatsink fan blows down on the heatsink to cool it.

If you do these things and blow the dust out with a can of air, it is my opinion (I have been wrong before my wife says) that you will be good to go and have a lot of your problems solved. However, we must wait and see.

Also, blowing the fans out with a can of air is one of the most important things you can do to take the heat problem away and at the same time prolong the life of the fan(s).

Post back if you have problems or don't understand.

Look at your motherboard. It may not be XP, but your capacitors (those little thigs that look like barrels on your mobo). If they are tilted or the tops are bulging or stuff is coming our of the top, the symptoms you described will occur. A quick look will tell you. If so, unless you are VERY good at hardware, your solution is a new mobo.

Ok well i just found out that my HSF was on the right way i just thought i felt it going the other way. and when i unscrewed it i found that the heatsink was COVERED with dust and so i dusted it with a special computer duster and now it's only at like 48C. I also checked the capacitors and they seemed to be fine. I also looked at my back fans and they are the right way too i have one side fan blowing air in thje computer and i was thinking about unscrewing it and trying to install it in a place up front (because the side that it is facing is right next to a wall by like 9in) but then i thought that i should ask you guys first. so i guess i'll see what happens tomorrow when i use a can of air to clean it out.
I'll keep you guys updated.

Alright I just got a can of air and got all the dust i could out of my computer, and I put the fan from the side up front, and now that temp is only around 43C I was wondering if that is good or if it should still be lower?
Hi,

While I like them just a little lower (I like them under 40c for at-rest), one must realize that some of the CPU's like you have run just a little warmer than others. When you have gone from 59c to 43c, tht is quite an accomplishment. I would use it for a few days, testing the temps while it is under-stress and see if it reboots. I would be interested in knowing what the temps get to under-stress, because that might be a better guideline of what else might need to be done. Then, if you have more difficulties, post back and we will continue our quest to get that temp even lower.

Addendum: One can always move the ribbon cables around (might have to cable tie them out of the way) to permit better air flow, and many of us in the business like to use those little round ribbon cables instead of those great big wide ones that come with a new unit. That permits better air flow through the case.

alright i have good news and bad news. The good news is that i had my computer on for like 6 hours yeterday and it didn't restart. The bad news is that in the first 10 min i was burning a dvd it resarted. I didn't get to see what the temp was when it was burning because it took to long to open the program and also i used nero if that helps at all.

Hi,

You never replied about breaking the seal between the CPU and heatsink when you took it apart. Did you clean and redo it when you did, or did you just put it back together. That is a real important issue here.
