Somehow my word documents were changed to a DOC File(doc) that opens with Internet Explorer. I can no longer open the documents. I tried opening my Passport which I use to back up these files and they were changed there also, I tried System Restore with several different restore dates with no success. The details stated System Restore did not complete successfully. An unspecified error occurred during system restore. Also I am no longer able to open Windows Media Player. I would appreciate any suggestions on how I can solve these problems. Thank you in advance for your help.

Word documents are a .doc or .docx for word 2007 and newer.
All you need to do is change the file association from IE to Word.

Hit Start from the right column click default programs from the list select Associate a file type or protocol with a program, after the list populates scroll down to .doc select it click on change, then browse, navigate to to word.exe and select it.

I was able to solve problem with Word. After not being able to open Word I ran Microsoft Word 2002 CD which came with my 2006 Works Package. During installation it reconfigured to original settings. However, I am still very concerned with not being able to run a successful System Restore or not being able to open Windows Media Player. Any suggestions??

Hi, yes this looks like a malware problem, something has to cause this. As your system restore points are not working you might like to start fresh. Open restore and uncheck restore for your drive. Restart computer and go back and recheck restore, make a manual restore at this point. By doing this you flush all restore points and windows recreates a fresh shadow copy. Should repair the problem, if not you have some more serious issues.

Let us know what happens when you follow Wrench's advice in the previous post. Have you checked that your other links work, and it is only WMP? You may have to rebuild your .lnk file associations.

Hello: Thanks again for your responses. I'm not able to delete WMP as it is not a stand alone program in Vista.(Factory Installed) It tried the System Restore solution you suggested and System Restore did not complete successfully (Undisclosed error). I wasn't sure what Restore Point to install when prompted do I put in Previous Restore Point??. As far as I know other links work OK.

I misunderstood your instructions and tried to delete WMP before attempting to re-install. I followed your directions to link and tried downloading Vista WMP 11 . I had an out of date Windows Genuine Avantage Validation Tool which I then updated. After clicking on continue I was told only runs with XP?? I tried System Restore instructions from Jenae and System Restore was again unsuccessful. Is there some restore point I should enter when starting? I wasn't quite sure of what criteria was required.

Yea looking at it again that is only for the European editions that didn't come with Media player installed.

jeane is referring to creating a new restore point manually since you currently do not have a working one.

Try this for WMP
Open a elevated command prompt.(Start type cmd in the search list right click on cmd.exe and select run as administrator)
At the C: prompt type type regsvr32 jscript.dll and then hit enter. Then type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and hit enter. Then regsvr32.exe wmp.dll hit enter.

Try opening WMP.

Thank you Wrench97 & Jenae: I was able to successfully use System Restore after disabling and restoring and then inserting a manual restore point as you directed.
As for WMP: I entered cmd in the search column and the only thing that showed on screen was AcRdB7_0_8. I went back to Search in start column and then entered Command Prompt and it opened. I then entered the dll's you directed and low and behold WMP now opens again. Thank you again so much, the Tech Forum is awesome.
