Inconsistent Router GUI and Internet Access

Network Hardware:
Sonicwall TZ205 (RTR1) and Asus RT-AC68U (RTR2)

Network Setup:
RTR1, is a wired router.
IP address is 192.168.1.1.
This router manages the network by providing firewall rules, DHCP, NAT, etc.
RTR1 connects to the ISP modem to provide WAN connectivity to the networks.
RTR1 is connected through LAN Port4 to RTR2 using an Ethernet cable.
LAN Port4 is configured with a static IP of 192.168.2.1.

RTR2, is a wireless router.
The local static IP of the AP is 192.168.2.1
This router is an AP mode, and does not provide services.

My computer has the following IP settings:

Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : MAC INFO REMOVED

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : DNS INFO REMOVED

NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

The Problem:

My computer can access the Internet successfully. However, I can never consistently access the GUI for RTR2. I get routed to the following error screen:

“Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.
Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-AC68U.
To access the settings of RT-AC68U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number.”

Refreshing the page doesn’t help, nor does opening a Private session, or clearing the browser cache. What does work is performing an nmap on 192.168.1.2 first, then if I go back to my browser, I can now access the RTR2 GUI. However, once I can access the GUI, I cannot access the Internet. If I perform another nmap on 192.168.2.1 my access to the GUI is revoked, but I can now access the Internet.

I have some other wireless devices which will also intermittently lose access to the Internet, and be presented with the RTR2 error screen. Sometimes disabling/enabling the wireless NIC helps, sometimes rebooting helps.

I have absolutely no idea why I am having such inconsistent access issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

You will probably have to connect the wireless router up to a computer or laptop temporarily using a wire (connected thru. WAN port) in order to configure properly.

While you're in there, check the router IP address. I'm thinking you may have mis-typed it, but your wireless router is on a different part of your network from the router that supplies IP addresses and also access to the Internet.

You might try changing the IP address to 192.168.1.2 (instead of 192.168.2.1) considering the wired router is on 192.168.1.1.

Once you make your changes, remove the wire and reboot the wireless router.

You should then have both routers on the same part of the network and wireless clients will be assigned IP addresses, etc. by the wired router and Internet, etc. will now be reachable by wireless clients.

Thanks for the reply.

The idea of of putting the wireless clients on a different network (192.168.2) is so they are seperated from the wired clients (on 192.168.1).

As i mentioned, this configuration does "work", but i am having inconsistent connectivity issues when attemping to access the router GUI (which is on the same network as my wireless NIC). I main issue is that i can never easily manage RTR2 and access the Internet during the same session.

There is no problem with having two different subnets with the Sonicwall.
There should also be no problem accessing router2 when connected via wifi.

"However, once I can access the GUI, I cannot access the Internet"

I suspect you are trying to either be connected wired and wirelessly at the same time or you are trying to access router2 via a wired connection.

You would need a static route in the sonicwall going from .1 to .2 networks. If no route existing you can't go from the wired network to the wireless network. This is why the direct connection works for the wireless.
