Hi

I have an Asus P5GDC Deluxe motherboard (ICH6R) based (with lastest BIOS 1007). SATA is set as AHCI in BIOS. Installed WinXP SP2 with F6 floppy. Drive is Maxtor 6B250S0.

How on earth do I get NCQ enabled. I have tried multiple installs to FAT32 and NTFS partitions. IAA 4.7 is always installed as are latest intel chipset drivers.

Maxblast software did not help.

Help!!!!

Cheers,
Andy :4-dontkno

That's simple...you can't....at least not with that drive...the maxtors that support NCQ to my knowledge are the Maxline III series only...

Then you probably forgot to enable AHCI support in the BIOS.
under "Ide Configuration"
take a look to see if you forgot to put that option as "Enable"

Hi Andyp

NCQ feature must be supported (build in) by the HD itself in teh first place. Check out my post with the screenshot picture from My Accelerator (http://www.techsupportforum.com/showpost.php?p=218885&postcount=45). And I even have a different mobo P4P800-E delux which many to believe doesn't support NCQ at all lol, but my installation actually says it does, and NCQ support is not hardwired into the ICH5R controller, but rather depends on what drivers do you use. I used tho ones developed for the next genearation of the controller but the papaer mentioned that this driver still has a support for the previous controller whic is mine so I went for that drive insted of the one specifically build for the 5R model.

k guys here is the full story.

I have a system that runs on ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard (soket 478). With Intel 865PE and Intel ICH5R chipset (notice it's very important that there is a letter xxxR at the end, because the drivers that I used support ONLY ICH5R (raid version) not ICH5!!!, they just dont' work on ICH5 chipset). Here is some words about these two shipsets ICH5R and ICH5 from Intel. BUT as long as we are talking about P4P800-E Delux mobo ICH5 is not our concern.....

QUOTE: "The Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition only supports the RAID controller in ICH5R and will not work with an ICH5 I/O Controller Hub.

If you have an ICH5 I/O Controller Hub, please use the Microsoft* native storage driver built into Windows*. The Microsoft native storage driver supports both Serial ATA and Parallel ATA hard drives.

It is important to know that there are two different ICH5 I/O Controller Hubs: ICH5R and ICH5. The letter 'R' in ICH5R identifies that the I/O Controller Hub has Intel® RAID Technology. ICH5 (without the letter 'R') identifies that the I/O Controller Hub does not have Intel RAID Technology. Intel® 865 and 875 chipset-based platforms may use the ICH5R or ICH5 I/O Controller Hub and which one you have is dependent upon your specific motherboard."

The HDD that I installed into my System were two SATA Seagate Barracuda with NCQ support, 80Gb (check out my screenshot for the model posted earlier in a different topic). I pluged them in into RAID1 and RAID2 ports on the motherboard and configured them as RAID, hitting F6 button I installed this driver version 4.7 !!! not the 3.0 or 3.5
(http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_Desc.asp?agr=Y&ProductID=1809&DwnldID=8225) made a floppy out of this download.

My WinXP liked it with no problem! After I'm up and running I installed this Application Accelerator again Version 4.7 (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_Desc.asp?agr=N&ProductID=1809&DwnldID=8223)

BTW I noticed that Andyp has the Controller installed named Intel(R) 82801FR which is ICH6R but not 5R which is probably right for his motherboard, cuzz when I hit F6 during Windows Installation I choose the Intel(R) 82801ER I/O controller hub (ICH5R).

That's it, with these two downloads I'm up and running on my mobo with two HDDs and enabled NCQ!!

Dim,

Thanks for supplying these details. I really appreciate it. One question: it looks like you used the driver for a RAID configuration. Many of us, myself included, are running our SATA HDD's in IDE mode. I don't think the IAAR driver is what would work for us. Am I right, and is there another driver we could/should use?

Thanks so much for your assistance here ....

Pete

Hey, it's hard to tell whether you have to install anything during WinXP set up initially (F6). I beleive no! cuzz F6 is only for the Third party RAID or SCSI controllers, but I went through the release note for this Intel driver and they say that the driver could be installed when WinXp is up and running, then you go to Control Pane -> Device Manager adn look for an entry "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", then expand it and look for following controllers: 'Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller' or 'Intel(R) 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller'. In reality on my motherboard I see "'Intel(R) 82801EB SATA Controller'", so I think that this driver could work but not primary support the SATA controler in NON RAID mode or so said AHCI mode. I wand to check the release note for the previous driver version and see what Intel says there.... (but this is later).

Plus at the same time Intel mention that: "If you are installing the operating system on a system configured for RAID or AHCI mode, you must pre-install
the Intel(R) Application Accelerator driver using the
F6 installation method" .....

Anyway to draw the line I would give it a try to Install this driver (F6) even during the NON RAID SATA usage, to see if there is an advantage, but for now, try to see what driver right now installed on your PC in device manager and see if you could update it to the one supplied by Intel (make sure to backup your data before)

Dim,

It's very possible that my problem (and some others who have had similar problems) is with the Maxtor NCQ drives. You have Seagate NCQ and no problems, and can load the drivers at the F6 time. However, I am unable to get that far. Whenever I put my Maxtor on an ICH5R Sata port, the computer freezes up, and I can't even get into the BIOS, much less get to the XP-F6 point to install a driver.

Yep I understand, there must be something else even before those Intel drivers and F6 which is really hard to torubleshoot cuzz there is no log no errors or anything that could help to troublshoot this issue..

Maybe the solution ?

Hi ! Check the following link : http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2094
See what's written under the window with BIOS settings ?
I think it's the reason why you can't enable NCQ. Try again to reinstall XP (boring...I know, but nothing else to do) without forgetting to set AHCI mode in BIOS before installation, use F6, reinstall IAA, and it should work !

Nerevar,

I read that link, and it appears they are talking about how to get NCQ to work on an ICH6R controller. We are all having problems getting it to work on and ICH5R controller (or more precisely, getting our systems to even recognize the NCQ HDD -- forget about actually implementing NCQ) :sayno: ...

... but you can be our friend for life anyway -- we appreciate your trying to help!

Well, that's the million dollar question. When I connect that drive to a ICH5R SATA port (either 1 or 1) and power up, the system freezes up and I can't get into the BIOS. If I disconnect that NCQ drive, put on a WD non-NCQ HDD, everything works great. I moved the Maxtor NCQ down to the Promise Controller, and everything works fine there.

Other folks have reported a similar problem. It's something to do with NCQ-Maxtor-Intel-Asus, but no one has been able to figure out the problem, much less fix it. Asus does say that ICH5R does not support NCQ, but why does it freeze things up? Just ignore the NCQ, and I'd be happy.

What's aggravating is that a lot of folks are having this kind of problem, and ASUS and Maxtor have both ignored my entreaties to them.

Not surprising from them...
Apparently, if it freezes the system, it must be a compatibility problem with BIOS programmation (composed by a lot of unvisible little parmeters, one wrong bite and freezing can happen !). Hope we'll find a solution, cos If you have to wait a BIOS upgrade by ASUS... :dead:

#21 ·
lol! I'm hoping there will be BIOS update someday. In the meantime, I'm doing OK; I've got two WD 160GB SATA HDD's (non-ICQ) on the ICH5R controller, and the Maxtor 250GB on the Promise that I use for mass storage.

Meanwhile, others go out and spend their hard-earned money for that one nice SATA NCQ HDD that isn't going to work. ASUS should at least warn them of this problem when they purchase a mobo with ICH5R.

Oh well .... :4-dontkno

Another idea

Can you tell me when freezing occur (after/before POST, etc...), and if you have additionnal parameters such as "ALPE and ASP", "Stagger spinup support", "AHCI port 3 interlock Switch" when set to "AHCI" mode ?
If they're here tell me about their status (important).

ICH5R vs Maxtor Native SATA

Hello Folks, I experienced this problem fist hand, bought myself a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 16mb cache NCQ True Sata disk plugged into SATA1 and SATA2 and as soon as the computer posted, it froze on me...doesn't boot into anything let alone choose which boot device. When I plugged it onto the Promise Controller SATA ports, no problem...it was detected and everything.
I even wrote to Maxtor and according to the tech, he didn't know any compatibilty between the Maxtor with NCQ and ICH5R....of course their products are never at fault...
Anyway, I stopped trying and got myself A nice Raptor instead for the OS and games and oh boy...am I happy....
So for those with the Intel ICH5(R) Southbridge, stay away from the Maxtors with NCQ....

Nerevar,

As Oceanborn says, it freezes up right after post ... I get the screen that says press delete to enter bios (or something like that), but no key press will take me into the the bios setup. It's been too long for me to recall all the exact settings (but they were all set the 'correct way' -- and how Clintfan, one of the real experts here, suggested), but none of those you mention sound familiar to me.

Oceanborn,

Thanks for chiming in here...you and I have exactly the same problem with the same equipment and got around it pretty much the same way.

 Ok guys,
I got to go to sleep (here it's 4:42 am) and you must have been right to choose an alternative solution, cause I've been surfing on many forums for 2 hour and realised that even other Maxtor drives had problems with ICH5R-based mobos. Diamond 9 and 10 series almost always have the freezing problem when plugged to ICH5R (not when plugged to other controllers), or are not recognized. For me it confirms what I thought : it's a software incompatibility of the ICH5R parameters in BIOS that can't "marry" those new drives to him, and the only solution will be a BIOS revision and upgrade, like did Abit who had problems with Maxtor HDDs too. Finally, nothing diifferent with what happened and will happen again with other hardware, but when you're the one concerned :deveous: ...
See you later, guys.
